Enjoy some boutique espresso coffee, while our leading speaker(s) talk about key aspects of PostgreSQL, the world’s most advanced Open Source database. In particular, topics relevant to the practical deployment of PostgreSQL in support of mission critical business applications, will be covered.
The second of the FSP coffee mornings will be held at the Voodoo Espresso beanery (at 130 Abercrombie St, Chippendale) on Friday the 6th of October 2006 at 9:15am. Limited parking is available in the side streets just off Abercrombie St - walking from Central or Railway Square may better suit some people. Voodoo Espresso is about 150 metres down Abercrombie St from Broadway.

Grant Allen, from GrantOnData, will talk about what a business or government department goes through when porting to PostgreSQL – with an emphasis on the cultural shift needed, how to engage management and what makes PostgreSQL an "easy" target platform for software vendors, and how to persuade them to consider shifting their product to PostgreSQL.
Grant will talk for 40 minutes, and will take questions for a further 20 minutes.
There are only 25 places available, so please register through the online form provided here to secure your place.
Needless to say, the coffee’s on us! Visit www.voodooespresso.com for more information about Voodoo Espresso coffee.

The first ever Fujitsu Supported PostgreSQL (FSP) Coffee Morning was an interesting affair.
Gavin Sherry’s presentation summarized well the considerations one should take in deciding which High Availability(HA) approach best suits a particular set of business and technical requirements.

Gavin made the key observation at commencement that HA does not address scalability or performance issues, and balancing these important aspects with the need for reliability (as provided by HA) is required to achieve the best overall outcome.
Most of the questions from the audience suggested that people have broad familiarity with High Availability as a general topic. And from the post-presentation chit-chat, it appears many present are set to take the plunge and implement a solution in the not too distant future.
The winner of our door prize, a fantastic PostgreSQL t-shirt was Stuart Cooper from AAPT. Congratulations!
The coffee was, needless to say, excellent.
A PDF of Gavin's presentation is available.
Our next coffee morning is tentatively scheduled for Friday the 6th of October. Please pre-register online as before if you wish to attend. Click here for the registration page.
